Diversity Matters North West is an award winning independent local charity working to combat health inequalities and social exclusion and to promote community cohesion.
We are based at the Healthy Living Centre in Hyde, Tameside from where we host and co-ordinate regular activities and training for the local community, with the help of our volunteers.
Initially set up in 2007 as Hyde Community Action the charity expanded its remit in 2017 and became Diversity Matters North West. The charity grew out of the Asian Healthy Living Project which ran from 2003 to 2008.
In 2013 we received a Pride of Tameside award for our work with volunteers, and we were one of only 25 organisations nationally to receive new funding from the Government’s Volunteering fund.
Action Together CIO is the support and development organisation for Tameside, Oldham and Rochdale. Diversity Matters NW is one of our members and we have worked together in Tameside over many years. Diversity Matters NW provides a much-needed specialist resource for the South Asian Community in Tameside and works across many of its Townships. Action Together delivers the social prescribing service in Tameside and refers clients that we work with to Diversity Matter for support and to access a range of new opportunities including training and employment support. We regularly refer clients to Diversity Matters NW, we do not have any other local organisations that work across Tameside that can offer this type of support. Diversity Matters NW are also working in partnership with two local charities – TOG Mind and LEAP – to deliver Tameside’s new Community Buddy service – a pilot scheme, commissioned by Action Together’s Community Wellbeing Investment fund. The programme runs alongside our Social Prescribing service, to provide volunteer buddies who support people over a period of time to increase their confidence to attend community activities.
